After completing the Family Medicine Residency Program at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu Hawaii from 1999-2002, Dr. Hughes moved to Sanford, N.C. where she was chosen for a teaching position in the Family Medicine Residency at Ft. Bragg. Between 2003-2004 she was deployed to Iraq where she functioned as an emergency room physician. While it was extremely challenging in many respects, Dr. Hughes took great pride in providing state-of-the-art medical care for the troops of all nations.
In 2006, Dr. Hughes resigned from her U.S. Army commission and joined an emergency medicine group in North Carolina. During this time, her husband, David, was badly injured and initially paralyzed from an explosion while serving as a Special Forces Detachment Commander. As a result, David underwent a long surgery and years of rehabilitation. Now, though he experiences numbness in his legs, he is no longer paralyzed and enjoys a full life.
It was during his recovery that Dr. Hughes witnessed and began to further explore the lifelong benefits of functional medicine. At the encouragement of David’s father, David introduced supplements like Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a natural source of sulfur for pain relief and Rhodiola Rosea, a root extract, for his well-being and energy. Both remedies had dramatic effects on David’s overall health.
Inspired by the positive outcomes of her husband’s experience with natural solutions, Dr. Hughes began a new chapter in Functional Medicine to explore disease prevention, natural and integrated treatments, and a greater partnership with patients.
In 2009, Dr. Hughes started studying Functional Medicine, and in 2015 she acquired the Dr. David Perlmutter Health Center. Now, along with her physician partners and staff, she is witness to the power and success of Functional Medicine, not only for her family but through her patients each and every day.
We work closely with you to locate your triggers and risk factors. By doing so, we attempt to remove what is overwhelming your body or causing disease. The teamwork between doctor and patient is the key ingredient to discovering your path to lifelong health and wellness.
In order to develop a plan for your optimal health, we are also able to collaborate with your other physicians and health care providers. We value the opportunity to work with your existing physician(s) in developing and maintaining your treatment. You cannot be seen by a Hughes Center for Functional Medicine provider without a primary care physician on record.
